Guests Ian and Jo Porteous talk about their experience in Corfu
Since coming to Corfu as a child and reminiscing during these difficult times of covid-19, I thought it would be a good idea to write a blog regarding my wifes and my time at the Hotel Corfu Secret, Agios Markos, Kerkyra.
A lot has changed since the summer of 1994 in Agios Markos, where I was a 11 year old child eager to have fun in the sun, stay at the beach all day and meet new friends, especially the locals. I can recall my fond memories of the area and the local people who helped make this happen in this fabulous welcoming village.
Back in the day a swimming pool was hard to come by in many hotels and tavernas. Air-conditioning was an extreme luxury so we had to use a fan. The beach was our playground which kept us entertained all day followed by a gentle stroll back from Ypsos to the old taverna. We passed an old family run supermarket on our travels, and opposite the supermarket, adjacent to our taverna, was an old house with olive groves built on an embankment. This house had huge potential. This later became the Hotel Corfu Secret.
Fast Forward to 2017 and time for a little impromptu sun.
While staying in Pyrgi, I had a walk up the secret steps to the road leading to Agios Markos. I found the old Taverna but not the old house. The old house that had the huge potential was now the Hotel Corfu Secret. Stunning! So much so, my wife and I booked the following year and we were not disappointed.
This hotel boasts the best view of Ypsos. It overlooks Albania, the port, with Corfu town in the distance. The traditional exterior is only just the start of what can only be described as the perfect retreat. The greeting received upon arrival is so warm and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble. Swift check-in, bags taken to our room, what more could we have asked for.
The interior has been designed with absolute attention to detail. Original art work, beautiful ornaments and furniture and everything is in just the right place. Its warm, luxurious, yet homely but extravagant.
A perfectly stocked and presented bar leads the way to the most incredible balcony with the view to end all views. Magical!
Our room was just perfect. Everything we needed and expected. Clean, spacious, wonderful air-conditioning and comfortable with the bonus of that view from our cozy balcony.
The pool, complete with pool bar is just beautiful. Sun loungers are at the ready, with cafe tables and chairs for many and not forgetting the shower to cool off as its a complete sun trap.
Breakfast caters for all and is perfect.
Now we get to speak about the owner of The Hotel Corfu Secret. Spiros is seriously cool. A total gentleman who welcomes you to his Hotel as though he's welcoming you in to his home. Professional, engaging, involving and he makes the best mojito ever!
Working for Mr Spiros is Lydia who brings a ray of sunshine to every day. She is there to greet, to advise, to help and make everyones stay at the Hotel Corfu Secret, so special.
As you can tell, we’re hooked and can’t wait till we’re able to come back to this magical hotel on such a beautiful island.
